TV Show Review: Mahesh Bhatt's NaamKaran Looks Promising
The Barkha Bisht-Viraf Patel starrer has replaced Diya Aur Baati Hum on Star Plus
NaamKaran is an adaptation of the 1998 film Zakhm, which is based on director Mahesh Bhatt’s life. To put it shortly, watching the show’s first episode was like seeing a stretched version of the movie’s hit number Tum Aaye Toh Aaya Mujhe Yaad. That’s not to say that it doesn’t look promising.
The first episode introduces Barkha Bisht (Asha) and Viraf Patel (Ashish Mehta), who have a child born out of wedlock. However, Asha and Ashish lie to the world and their daughter Avni (Arsheen) that they have been married for 11 years.

But that lie falls flat when Avni insists on her father’s presence on her school annual day, and he is unable to do so. Meanwhile, Asha gets pregnant again, and Ashish promises to marry her and give their kids a normal life.

The episode also introduces Ashish’s mother – a staunch Gujarati woman played by Reema Lagoo. Despite her being an ideal mother, Ashish is scared of her. Why? The answer, we are sure, will be revealed in the upcoming episodes.

Here are the highlights from NaamKaran’s first episode:
Ashish loves his wife, daughter and mom to the core. It remains to be seen if he is able to balance all the relationships.
Ashish lies to his mom that Asha is his colleague -- without batting an eyelid. That one scene strongly establishes his weakness.
Asha is strong enough to raise Avni alone, but she becomes extremely vulnerable in front of Ashish. She longs for him, despite knowing that the society will never accept their relationship.
Ashish is also equally strong-willed and doesn’t fear the society. He is ready to take the plunge when he says, “Iss baar main Maa se poochne nahi jaunga, batane jaunga.” But will he be able to muster the courage in front of his mom?
Arsheen, who plays Avni, is a powerhouse of talent. Anger, love, confusion – she showcases a whole range of emotions brilliantly.
PS: I am eager to watch how Reema Lagoo’s character unfolds.
